Watermanagement Nijmegen – ecological improvement of the watersystem

By signing the declaration of intentions (1998) and the Waterplan (2001) the waterpartners agreed to co-operate on a sustainable waterchain with the aim of creating a sound and resilient watersystem and an attractive living environment on the lowest possible joint cost

The Waterplan Nijmegen has the following main goals:

Do not spill drinkingwater

Let rainingwater refill the deep groundwater stock in stead of throwing it away by mixing it with sewage

Bring down the stealthy pollution of the water

Use water to create an attractive living environment

Create a sound and resilient system of open water

The municipality and the waterboard Rivierenland take measures:

2003 - start monitoring water system (water quality, water quantity, ecosystem and technical objects)

2004 - elaborate ambitions >> measurements

remove sludge, and restore the hard bankprotection where needed

create naturally banks and playing elements

create optimal ecological conditions

2005 till 2008 - reconstruction of three pilot projects: Pond Lindenholt, Ponds Geologenstrook, Ponds Grand Canal
