Sustainable storm water management in Nieuwegein - The New Waterway
In the next years to come, the Municipality of Nieuwegein will be executing several water projects nominated as the New Waterway. These water projects contribute to a cleaner environment and an improved water balance. The New Waterway aims at sustainable water management. The first part of the town where we are going to realize the new Waterway is Zandveld (see picture below).
Which projects?
- Sewer replacement (see a)
- Disconnection of storm water runoff (see b)
- Realisation of filterbasins (see c)
- Mud removal (see d)
Sewer replacement (a)
In several parts of the town, the sewer has to be replaced and improved. In that way waste water of houses and companies can be washed away quicker. Here you see in which parts of the town a part of the sewer will be replaced.
Disconnection of storm water runoff (b)
Disconnection of storm water runoff is the realisation of a separate system for washing away the rainwater to canals and ditches in the neighbourhood. The sewer will be less loaded. When it rains heavily the sewer does not have to be void its polluted water onto the surface water. To spare costs, the disconnection of storm water runoff will be combined with the sewer replacement.
More on disconnection of stormwater runoff see download area below.
Realisation of filter basins (c)
In Nieuwegein several filter basins will be realised. Filter basins are underground concrete basins for temporarily storage of redundant water after heavy rainfall. These basins of 30 by 5 by 2 metres are build completely underground. Only a regulator will be placed on the ground level. In this “underground swimming pool” the polluted sewer water will come at rests. Part of the pollution will sink to the bottom of the basin. This sedimentation will be abducted by an automatic pumping system. This water will be led to a treatment plant in order to be cleaned.
How does a filter basin look like - see download area below.
Mud removal (d)
In ditches and puddles the mud will be removed to prevent silting up. The municipality takes care of that together with the Waterboard Hoogheemraadschap de Stichtse Rijnlanden. In autumn 2004 the removal of mud was started in the part of Nieuwegein which is called batau. In 2005 and 2006 other parts of the town will follow: Doorslag and Zuilenstein.
